Brian Kelly was all smiles at his first fall camp press conference, diving into what’s shaping up to be an exciting season for LSU. He shared his thoughts on the team’s prep, player health, and how college football’s changing landscape is pushing the program to adapt.
Easing Players In, Keeping The Team Healthy
Kelly kicked things off by talking about a smart, seven-day plan to get players ready for the grind of camp. “We’re starting light to avoid those nagging soft tissue injuries you often see early on,” he said, noting that the first week is critical. The team’s ramping up gradually, with built-in recovery days to keep everyone fresh for the tough weeks ahead.
A Tight-Knit Team Ready to Roll
You could hear the pride in Kelly’s voice as he talked about how close this group has become over the past seven months. “These guys show up on time, bring the energy, and hold themselves to a high standard,” he said. From leadership training to physical and tactical work, the team’s been putting in the effort, and Kelly’s confident they’re ready to shine.
Navigating a New Era in College Football
Kelly didn’t shy away from the big changes in college football, especially with revenue sharing shaking things up. He mentioned how the game now requires a bigger staff to handle things like player contracts and agent negotiations—stuff that’s way beyond a head coach’s usual playbook.
Proactive, Not Reactive
When asked about past season openers, Kelly was clear: this year’s plan isn’t about fixing old mistakes—it’s the result of months of deliberate work. “Everything from recruiting to spring ball to our offseason program has been about starting 1-0,” he said, emphasizing a proactive approach.
Big Returns Boost Team Vibes
Kelly couldn’t hide his excitement about the return of Whit Weeks and Harold Perkins. “Their presence out there is huge,” he said, praising not just their skills but the leadership they bring to the table. It’s clear these guys are setting the tone for the whole squad.
Dominick McKinley Ready to Break Out
Defensive lineman Dominick McKinley got a big shoutout for his monster offseason, including a jaw-dropping 650-pound squat. Kelly’s got high hopes for him, saying he’s on track to be a key player on the defensive line thanks to his hard work and growth.
Coaching Staff Hitting Their Stride
With most of the coaching staff back for year two, Kelly noted how comfortable and focused they are. “Guys like Joe (Sloan) and Cortez (Hankton) can just do their jobs without worrying about proving themselves,” he said. He also gave a nod to Blake Baker, who’s been given the keys to run the defense.
Battles Up Front
The offensive line is still sorting itself out, with Braelin Moore sliding to center and DJ Chester moving to left guard as competition heats up. Tyree Adams is holding down the left tackle spot for now, but Kelly left the door open for a freshman to step up. He’s impressed with Adams’ growth and confidence.
Big-Play Passing Game
As for the passing game, Kelly’s pumped about the potential for big plays, name-dropping Chris Hilton, Nic Anderson, Zavion Thomas, Aaron Anderson, Barion Brown, and Kyle Parker as guys who can stretch the field. Kelly’s thrilled with the wide receiver group, calling them “eight SEC-caliber playmakers” who are pretty much interchangeable. That depth will help keep everyone fresh.
Kelly wrapped up by doubling down on the team’s focus on growth and preparation. With fall camp underway, it’s clear he’s got a clear vision and a squad ready to make some noise.
